Gründerzeit tenements in the Kreuzgassenviertel by the Währinger Gürtel, villas in the Währinger Cottage by the Türkenschanzpark and the Sternwartepark, the Lindenhof and the Pfannenstielhof on Kreuzgasse, the Rudolf-Sigmund-Hof and post-war estates in Gersthof, Gründerzeit villas on Pötzleinsdorfer Straße.
Währing has two building histories. In the north the Gründerzeit only got as far as Gymnasiumstraße, in the south it reached the Vorortelinie, and the densest part is the south-east towards the Gürtel, such as the Kreuzgassenviertel between Vinzenzgasse, Kreuzgasse, Währinger Gürtel and Jörgerstraße. Between Gymnasiumstraße and Sternwartestraße lies the Cottage, laid out by the Wiener Cottage Verein, founded in 1872, for houses with gardens for one or two families. Today it is a protected zone (Schutzzone) that also takes in the Sternwartepark. On Kreuzgasse stand Karl Ehn's Lindenhof and the Pfannenstielhof, both built over 1924 and 1925 and the first council estates in the district. Gersthof has the Rudolf-Sigmund-Hof on Gersthofer Straße and the post-war estates in Czartoryskigasse and Wielemansgasse, and Pötzleinsdorf the Gründerzeit villas along Pötzleinsdorfer Straße. Almost half of all buildings in the district date from before 1919.
In the tenements of the Kreuzgassenviertel that often means a consumer unit in the hallway with no RCD, screw-in fuses, sockets without an earth, and a kitchen that shares a circuit with the bathroom. In a Cottage villa the cable runs are long, the house connection and the meter often sit in the cellar, and there is garden cabling and outdoor lighting on top. Where stucco and panelling have survived, we run the cables so that none of it suffers. In the Lindenhof, the Pfannenstielhof or the Rudolf-Sigmund-Hof we work inside the flat on your instruction, and on the rising main only once Wiener Wohnen has given clearance. The list price is the same on the fourth floor in Kreuzgasse as behind the hedge in Pötzleinsdorf.

Questions from Währing
Our house is in the protected zone of the Währinger Cottage. What does that mean for new cabling?
The protected zone covers the outward appearance of the houses and does not usually affect cabling inside. So that the stucco, floors and panelling in the villa stay as they are, we run new cables through the cellar and the attic or behind skirting boards instead of chasing into the walls. If something is going to show on the outside, a light on the facade or a wallbox at the drive, we check with you before you give us the job whether it has to be submitted for approval.
We live in the Lindenhof. Can we hire you without going through Wiener Wohnen?
For everything inside the flat, yes, from a socket to the inspection report. In estates from 1924 and 1925 such as the Lindenhof or the Pfannenstielhof we first look at what has been changed at the flat's consumer unit over a hundred years, and a missing RCD can be added inside the flat. Wiener Wohnen only comes into it when we need to get at the rising main or the meter cabinet in the stairwell.
The flat is in the Kreuzgassenviertel and still has screw-in fuses. Is an RCD enough?
If the cabling is sound, an RCD in the existing consumer unit is a sensible first step. But in the tenements between Kreuzgasse and the Währinger Gürtel some sockets are still wired without their own earth, and then the RCD is only part of the protection. We test everything first and tell you what the RCD covers in your flat and what it does not, with the fixed price for each route.
Does the trip up to Pötzleinsdorf cost more than to Kreuzgasse?
No. The call-out is the same anywhere in Vienna, 69 € once per visit, whether you live by the Gürtel or up in Pötzleinsdorf.
