At around two square kilometres Margareten is one of Vienna's smallest districts, and at 26,710 people per square kilometre it is the most densely populated. The district's coat of arms still shows six once-independent communities, from Hundsturm and Laurenzergrund to Matzleinsdorf and Reinprechtsdorf. By around 1900 these rural suburbs had grown into a tightly built-up city district. Of the roughly 2,100 buildings counted in 2011, 1,200 date from before 1919. Among them are the low Biedermeier houses on Schlossgasse and Hofgasse. Along the Margaretengürtel the Herweghhof, Metzleinstaler Hof, Reumannhof and Franz-Domes-Hof follow one after another, and at Matzleinsdorfer Platz stands the Theodor-Körner-Hof of the fifties, with around 1,350 flats and the twenty-storey Matzleinsdorfer Hochhaus.

Just over four in ten flats in the district are privately rented, and almost one in five belongs to the city. Most people in Margareten rent, then, and so we keep seeing the same picture.
