Since 1892 Hernals has been made up of three old suburbs, Hernals, Dornbach and Neuwaldegg, and the district map still shows it. The dense east, old Hernals between the Gürtel and the Vorortelinie railway plus the Frauenfeld in Dornbach just across the line, covers only a sixth of the district's area, yet around three quarters of the people of Hernals live there. In old Hernals, dense Gründerzeit blocks line Hernalser Hauptstraße, Jörgerstraße and Kalvarienberggasse, which meet at Elterleinplatz. The Frauenfeld, between the Vorortelinie, Alszeile and Hernalser Hauptstraße, was only built up after Hernals station opened in 1898, with tenements of four to six storeys and council housing (Gemeindebau) from the first third of the twentieth century. Further west, in Dornbach and Neuwaldegg, villas and low-density building set the tone. On the slopes of the Heuberg and the Schafberg, detached houses and blocks of owner-occupied flats were added, and on the Heuberg stand the terraced houses of the estate that Adolf Loos built in 1923 and 1924.

In the blocks between the Hernalser Gürtel, Bergsteiggasse and Ottakringer Straße, a block renovation area (Blocksanierungsgebiet) since 2013, the most common type of building is a front house on the street with two wings around a narrow courtyard. In those wings the flat's consumer unit often still sits in a box by the front door out in the hallway, fitted with screw-in fuses and no RCD. The district's council estates range from the one in Balderichgasse, built from 1922 to 1924 as the first Gemeindebau in Hernals, to the Bruno-Kreisky-Hof on Alszeile, which dates from 1983 to 1987. In the Ernest-Bevin-Hof in Andergasse or the estate at Alszeile 118, the work is mostly sockets, the cooker connection, a ceiling light or the E-Befund before the flat is handed back. In the villas of Dornbach and Neuwaldegg it is old house connections, outdoor cabling and the wallbox on the garage.
