Late Gründerzeit tenements in the protected zone between Meiselstraße and Hütteldorfer Straße, interwar council housing such as the Somogyi-Hof and the Schimonhof, the Hugo-Breitner-Hof and the Anton-Figl-Hof from the fifties, settlement houses on the Wolfersberg, villas in the Vienna Woods style in the Cottage quarter and on Loudonstraße in Hadersdorf-Weidlingau, new build in the Karrée Breitensee on the site of the old tram depot.
Penzing runs from the border with the fifteenth deep into the Vienna Woods. Almost half of the district is forest, and it is made up of five old villages: Penzing, Breitensee, Baumgarten, Hütteldorf and Hadersdorf-Weidlingau. In the east, on Meiselstraße between Reinlgasse and Drechslergasse and up to Hütteldorfer Straße, an almost unbroken run of tenements built between about 1900 and 1914 has survived, and it is designated a protected zone (Schutzzone). Alongside them stand the estates of Red Vienna, such as the Somogyi-Hof on Hütteldorfer Straße and the Schimonhof on Penzinger Straße, both built between 1927 and 1929, and on Linzer Straße the Hugo-Breitner-Hof, with 1,272 flats on 127 staircases, built between 1949 and 1956. In the west, towards the forest, stand the settlement houses on the Wolfersberg, the villas of the Cottage quarter in Hadersdorf and the houses along Mauerbachstraße.
In the tenements between Meiselstraße and Hütteldorfer Straße we find consumer units in the hallway without an RCD, screw-in fuses, and sockets without an earth that were added decades ago. In the flats of the Hugo-Breitner-Hof and the Anton-Figl-Hof, both from the fifties, we first check how much of the original installation is still in use. Questions from Penzing
Our flat is in the protected zone on Meiselstraße. Are you even allowed to run cables there?
Yes. The protected zone is there to preserve the streetscape of the houses from around 1900, and it does not govern the electrical installation in your flat. Inside the flat, a building on Meiselstraße is no different for us than an old build outside the zone. Only on the facade, for an outdoor light or a new doorbell panel, for example, do we check with the Hausverwaltung beforehand what is permitted.
We live in the Hugo-Breitner-Hof. Who do we have to ask before you work on the fuse box?
For sockets, lights, the cooker connection or an E-Befund in your flat, you give us the job directly. If the work touches the flat's consumer unit or cables in the wall, we check with you before the appointment whether Wiener Wohnen has to consent, and we work on the meter cabinet or the rising main only with their clearance. In the 199 attic flats added during the full refurbishment of 2003 to 2007, the installation dates from that work and is correspondingly newer.
Our settlement house on the Wolfersberg dates from the twenties. Can the house connection take a wallbox?
With a house from the first building phase on the Wolfersberg, the wallbox check starts with the house connection and the consumer unit. If the connection has not been renewed in decades, the available power is sometimes tight, and then we arrange an upgrade with Wiener Netze before we mount anything. If there is enough power, the wallbox goes on the garage or the house wall with its own cable and its own RCD, at the price from the list.
