Hietzing grew out of six former villages, Alt-Hietzing by the Kennedybrücke, Unter St. Veit, Ober St. Veit, Hacking, Lainz and Speising, and no other district in Vienna has so large a share of its flats in private ownership. Hietzinger Hauptstraße runs from the palace park at Schönbrunn out to Unter and Ober St. Veit, lined with Gründerzeit villas and blocks of flats with historicist and in places Secessionist facades, older Biedermeier houses in between, and almost its whole length lies in conservation zones. Just behind the wall of the palace park, around Maxingstraße and Gloriettegasse, lies the old villa quarter of Alt-Hietzing. In Lainz and Speising stand the interwar estates, the Hermeswiese, the Lockerwiese and the Werkbundsiedlung. Then there are the Gemeindebau blocks of the fifties. The largest is the Steinitzhof on the Hietzinger Kai, and another is the Vier-Jahreszeiten-Hof in Bossigasse.
In a villa the work is the house connection, a consumer unit in the basement that has been extended for decades but never replaced, cabling out to the garage and the garden house, and more and more often a wallbox beside the garage door. In the Gründerzeit blocks on Hietzinger Hauptstraße and in the fifties blocks, the RCD is often still missing, and the kitchen hangs on a circuit from when the building went up. Questions from Hietzing
Our house is a Gründerzeit villa with old electrics. Where do you start?
With the house connection and the consumer unit, usually in the basement. We measure whether the supply cable and the main fuse still match what the house needs today, and write down what should be renewed and in what order. Each stage gets its fixed price beforehand, and the meter change goes through Wiener Netze.
We live in the Werkbundsiedlung. Are you even allowed to work there?
Yes. Sockets, switches, lights or an E-Befund inside the house you book with us directly. The estate is a listed monument and lies in a conservation zone. Most of the houses belong to the City of Vienna, and a few are privately owned. If you live in one of the city's houses, we agree every new cable route in the walls with the landlord first, and nothing goes on the facade without approval, no trunking and no outdoor light.
We want a wallbox in the drive of our house in Speising. Can the original house connection cope?
The wallbox check on site shows that. We look at the house connection, the main fuse and the consumer unit. If the capacity is not enough for 11 kW, there are two ways forward, load management in the wallbox or a capacity increase from Wiener Netze. You get a written quote, and the check is credited against the job if you go ahead.
We own the flat, but the building belongs to an owners' association. Who do we have to ask?
In Hietzing that is an everyday question, since the district has the largest share of privately owned flats in all of Vienna. Inside your flat you decide alone. As soon as we touch the rising main, the meter cabinet in the stairwell or a cable in the underground car park, we need the go-ahead from the Hausverwaltung that runs the building for the owners, and we draw up the paperwork for that for you.
