More than a third of Simmering's residents live in council housing (Gemeindebau) or other public housing, and a further good quarter in cooperative housing. Between the wars the city built its council courtyard blocks around Enkplatz and Herderplatz, and the first of them, the Alfons-Petzold-Hof on Lorystraße, was finished in 1924. The Hasenleiten estate was built in stages between 1937 and 1950 on the site of a First World War barrack hospital, and the Karl-Maisel-Hof followed around 1970, with more than 1,000 flats on 58 staircases. Gründerzeit houses stand mainly on the stretch of Simmeringer Hauptstraße nearest the city centre, and on the same street lies the Weißenböckstraße estate with its terraced houses from 1923 and 1928. The Leberberg was built up in the nineties, and since 2001 the four converted Gasometers have held around 600 flats. A few steps from the first gate of the Zentralfriedhof lies the Gartensiedlung Neugebäude, an allotment colony from the years after the First World War where people may now live all year round. Right out in the east come the allotments on both sides of Zinnergasse between Kaiserebersdorf and Neu-Albern, and the houses of Neu-Albern strung along the road near the Danube Canal.

In the interwar courtyard blocks and on the Hasenleiten estate the work is mostly small consumer units with two or three circuits, missing RCDs, and kitchens expected to run more appliances than the cabling of the day was meant for. In the blocks of the sixties and early seventies, such as the Karl-Maisel-Hof or those on Mautner-Markhof-Gasse, the original aluminium cabling is often still in place, and the consumer unit in the hallway has no room left for another breaker. On the Leberberg and in the Gasometers the installations are newer, and the work there is more likely light fittings, dimmers and whether your own parking space can have a wallbox.
